GOLDAMMER Goldmember strikes Gold

So when does a bike or motorcycle or a 2 wheeler stop being one and becomes a visual quotient? The general belief or logical reasoning would say when you have state of the art elements on a bike and it defines retro or futuristic images added with that something extra which makes it stand alone. Somehow or the other, Roger Goldammer has always always been the odd man out. His bikes do not ‘show’ any state of the art features, his bikes do not have a retro or modern or futuristic look, his bikes are not even cool if you measure cool by say a Confederate or even a Ducati. All his bikes do are win championships at wherever it participates! The king of custom building is really the odd ball here for what he envisages, others can’t even comprehend. His bikes are not just custom bikes, this is one custom bike designer who always works more on the machine then the get up and just to tell you, his get ups are fantastic. But it is the machine that Roger works his charm that has given his living room a look like a trophy collector for the numerous trophies he has won.
What you see here is the Goldmember, an awkward looking bike at the first instance and then it will gradually grow on you and to such an extent that you would probably feel like spending the next few days and nights working on your bike. There were earlier posts on Roger’s machines, Nortorious and ExperiMental in this blog and why I am saying this is because to know what goes inside that head of his, you need to go through the post.
Okay, moving on to this post, what do you see, a elongated yellow coloured bike with no headlamps (so, okay I get it, this is a race bike), a race bike with a 3/4th fairing and what an odd kind of fairing is that! Did I say race bike? But it has spoke wheels and would you look at that, there are no disc brakes either. Surely Roger must be crazy to make something like this. Ummm… no, not exactly, geniuses do have the ‘crazy’ thing going, but I don’t think the guys at AMD does or else why would they award the 2008 AMD World Championship title to this bike? So you know there has to be more than meets the eye, right, but let me tell you, the bike doesn’t even have an electric start. I guess guys at the AMD have realized that choosing a motorcycle for any category doesn’t mean the bike has to have very sweetly multicoloured with everything you can throw at or having the world’s best chrome paint on two obnoxiously long handle bars, customizing is more than that, it is that, but there is more to customizing a bike as Roger would make you believe with his creations.
All of Roger’s bikes are meant to be ridden and outperform its class (that would be really difficult in one way as his bikes are in a class which has only his bikes, anyway) and not only just perform, his bikes perform at the grandest stage of ‘em all, the Bonne Salts. How thus a bike averaging at 160 mph sound to you, I repeat averaging, not top speed. Well, that is what Roger’s customized Goldmember is capable of and has also ‘been there done that’.
If you are not a first timer on the Goldammer bikes, you would probably start off with a long look at the stunning designs he creates. Okay, I lied about the ‘not having disc brakes’ part. I am sure you knew that too. Just like the Nortorious, both of the wheels have disc brakes beneath the specially designed hubs which give an overall image of having drum brakes. But believe me, you really have to kick start the bike.
So what goes inside the Goldmember? The Goldmember is equipped with a custom 960cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine using modified Harley-Davidson cases and a supercharger and nitrous in addition to its streamlined bodywork. Yes, he still believes in single cylinders just like his Nortorious and ExperiMental.
The gentleman from Canada that he is, he is known as a soft spoken person with a sense of humour and always eager with his inputs. His favorite bikes are the Dirt bikes and Sport bikes and it is not hard to tell but taking a look at his creations. What he builds is unlike anything that even remotely comes close. I am still repeating you need to go through the earlier posts to know how this man thinks and works. He has removed the staid image of custom build motorcycles as flashy chopper designs with a ready made HD engine with what actual custom designing should be like, radical to the extreme, yet very appealing and always carrying the core of motorcycles – performance. Many people just might lose the fact that his creations are a visual delight actually, what happens is that people are so taken back by his brilliant engines that one would often tend to look at the performance sheet and miss out the visual gratification.
The Goldmember made an entry into the Salts at 2006 and that was before winning the AMD Championship in 2008. So focused he is on the performance front that for him, it is much more critical that his bikes have the performance to boast of. And when that is done, it also gets easy for the AMD guys to choose it as their favorite bike since visually it stands apart from the herd.
For the Goldmember, Roger specifically wanted something which had a real performance to speak of and yet compete at the highest level (the World Championships of Custom Bike Building), something no one has tried before, no, let me get that right, something no one has thought before and these kind of ideas come only to this man. Just close your eyes and think about a custom bike and think about the performance of the bike. What comes in your imagination is you in a chopper cruising along the desert roads, right. That is what Roger has broken away with it. That is what I meant by saying that Roger does what others don’t even think of. Before the world knew Roger Goldammer, performance and custom bikes were like poles apart. Performance bikes are plasticky bikes all covered up with not much of an appeal while custom bikes are usually all show and not much of a go. And the twain shall never met. At least till Mr. Roger Goldammer came along. It was along such a decision taken with a friend when they casually thought of a single rear cylinder mounted on the front with fuel injection and Roger added his thoughts as why should he stop at that, but rather a full blown, electronic fuel injected, intercooled, single cylinder H-D-based-engine running on nitrous. There you had it, this man just cannot think simple. So he thought of adding a supercharger too.
As expected, lots of in house manufacturing from the camshaft which was made out of two cams to changing the push rod angles went in the bike. The engine was rotated back 15 degrees and moved closer to the transmission. Of course those disc brakes in hiding had to be in house and so were the spoke wheels. Roger mentions that the wheel and its nearby including those hubs and brakes took a lot of time beside hard work and determination. Overall, starting from the frame to the front end which has ‘shock inside neck’ to the swingarm to both the wheels and brakes were made in house. Transmission is through a six-speed Baker gearbox of Baker. Roger usesd a Rotrex supercharged inlet pipe and the forward to provide sufficient air to create the highest capacity possible. The inlet on the body is designed as such to let in flow direction of the wind engine which will of course increase cooling capacity and maintain a temperature limit even if the vehicle operates at full maximum limit. I searched a lot on the net to know more about the engine, but came up with nothing more. If any of the readers have any information on it, please forward it.
Roger Goldammer wanted his Goldmember to look as simple as possible and that was the reason of those spoke wheels, disc brakes that looks like drums, a plain three quarter fairing, etc. But to do all thos in other words, to make the bike look simple was the most difficult part in fact. Probably that was a part which the AMD guys were impressed it and made it a winner. The engine and all, well that was probably the reason that stretched the gap between this bike and the runners up by more than 150 points.
Visit the Roger Goldammer website but the site has not been updated and there is not too much info on it. Or if you live in Canada, you may visit him at his workshop cum home at Kelowna, British Columbia or you can phone (250.764.8002), fax (250.764.8022) or Email (sjgoldammer@shaw.ca ). The championship winning bike was painted in yellow with the number 39 by Jerry Ashley while the nickel plating and chroming was done by Southwest Forge.

Goldammer ExperiMental with a 250cc rocket

Photo credit Motorcycle USA where mentioned in the photo itself, others are from Goldammer website.
Usually a 250cc single doesn't really excite many a people and you probably wont give a second glance to it. Now if that 250cc happens to be a 2 stroker, okay, there may be a few raised eyebrows being a screamer.
Now add the fact that it was on the Salts for a drag race. And again add to that it was against a Vincent. Now just add that this particular bike is designedby Roger Goldammer. See, now you stood up! So you see even a single 250cc can make you sit up!
This is the ExperiMental. And yes, Goldammer has never done the ordinary but he turns ordinary into something beyond extraordinary just as he did in the stunning Nortorious, the supercharged single cafĂ© racer. Although custom builders are immediately associated with long chromed frames and a V-Twin engine and of course it hold true for 99% of builders (Non-Japanese, since we know what they are really capable of) or lets say, 99% of American Custom builders, that 1% is made by genius like Roger who hails from Canada. It’s just that Roger Goldammer doesn’t build commissioned bikes anymore. He now designs customs for himself, as he wants to his own specifications and standards. His finances come through the sales of his parts line.
If you have gone through an earlier post on Matt Hotch’s Vincent Chopper, you must have read that the ExperiMental was the bike Roger had built for a TV episode of Discovery channel Biker Build-Off against Matt’s Vincent. In the salts, the ExperiMental at 128.774 mph (207 .21 kmph) edged out the Vincent at 99.728 mph (160.49 kmph). Imagine a 250 single doing 200+ and a 40s Vincent doing 160!!!!
That he won the build-off and the subsequent race in Bonneville is secondary. What we really need to praise here is that if there are no set limitations, what kind of out-of-the-box- thinking goes into the minds of a genius? I mean, just think about it, who would have thought that a 250cc engine can ever get this kind of an attention?
If you are still thinking of those figures, for the record, the ExperiMental managed to do a top speed of 212 kmph with a two-way average speed of 204.688kmph at breaking the previous record of 174kmph in the 250 M-G class, of course in the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Roger has made a habit of winning Championships starting for his twin victory at AMD at 2004 and again in 2005. His custom bikes features heavily modified engines and his specialty definitely seems to be the single cylinder. The ExperiMental was a 2007 bike and that year too, he won the 1st Place at AMD World Championship 2007 Metric Class. What really is more interesting about the engine is that it is a two-stroke BRC 250cc super kart motor and the frame’s donor is the CR 250 which is actually a dirt bike. The frame is heavily modified and fitted with dual KRC supercart motors. So what went into the ExperiMental? A brand new Honda CR250R, which was completely stripped out. The dirt bike’s frame was chopped from the centre. It was then widened to accommodate the custom front end, you know, a new engine with modded radiators. Keep looking at the pictures, you can relate to the build process. The down tube and the lower frame rails were cut and modified to give the bike a lower and longer attitude. Look at the photo of the ExperiMental and the original CR250 side by side.

About the engine, these 250cc engines are used in go-karting and this engine was designed by Rotax/ Aprilia and developed by BRC. Actually this engine is used in the premier go-kart league, the Superkart series and as hard it is to believe, this engine makes 91bhp, thanks to the motor which has its cylinders placed one behind the other with two counter rotating crankshafts. The two crankshafts are geared together. It also features an electric water pump. You see the curved radiators, they are from KTM and that shape was given by using a wooden jig. The expansion chambers had to be fabricated but some portions came from a Superkart exhaust with the same kind of specifications. Look at the sexy classy front end. It features a girder style front made from aircraft aerostream tubing with a Penske shock unit while the rear suspension is from Fox racing. Other important features include the brakes which are made of ceramic/ aluminum composite material and those wheels. The wheels are 19 inch upfront and 18 inch at the rear and are made in ultra lightweight carbon fiber.
Whatever gave Roger the idea or no matter who gave him the idea, but what is ExperiMental is, is a divine creation of work from the mind of a genius, that long and low geometry, with a bare minimum bodywork makes it very unique. I strongly doubt anyone except Roger will try for anything so radical as the ExperiMental. Well, of course, you can have it. You see, Roger has given up building customs for clients and he needs money to experiment on bikes like these. He said he has a few bills to pay and as such as he has all the bikes he has built till now, so he is selling off the Nortorious and the Experimental (and now his website lists even the 'Trouble' for sale) at a little over $127,000 and $116,000 respectively, I mean that’s the asking price, so…

NoRtorious Customization

I am sure you have seen this bike in countless websites, forums and blogs and after a minute of 'nice!' you go ahead. Then you read it somewhere that it is a Roger Goldammer creation and you are like 'Ok...' but but Goldammer makes those awesome stunning designs which always gets the top spot on custom design contests and this is rather plain, isn't it? Then you read it somewhere that this particular model made it to the 9th place in the World Championships. Okay, now you take a second look. That is exactly what I have done. Then when I saw the engine with a detailed eye, My-O-My! That looks like a Manx!!!

A little bit of googling told me that this model is named 'NORTORIOUS' and is based on a featherbed style frame (not a featherbed, but styled like it) with a single engine displaying 965cc. Although the Nortorious looks simple and plain, the Goldammer stamp is very visual. For instance, you dont see any wiring and hydraulic lines as they run inside the frame with nothing visible anywhere. Again, look at the wheels. Its drum brakes. No! It has hidden disc brakes, but it wouldn't have gone with the retro looks, so there...
When you think Custom, the first thing that comes into mind is Choppers, right! This is where Roger is different and thats why he is truly the master of custom bike championships. For instance, take a look at another of his products, the TROUBLE. The fisrt glance wont give away what the bike actually holds. Well, lets not divert here from the Nortorious here. We all know this man and here are a list of achievements if you really want the details.
Now, getting back to the bike, this British Columbia Canadian native is a different breed. His 'custom' Nortorious is neither a chopper nor an 'old school' product. Can you really bracket it?
Friend, mentor and master machinist Bert Kuckelkorn and Roger makes bikes that are truly innovative in styling and mechanics or you can say 'on the cutting edge of technology'. the Nortorious is a step higher in the rouble direction, which was also a single cylinder masterpiece.
For the record, TROUBLE won him the top World Championship honors. The Nortorious is a tribute to the Manx and there is ofcourse a visual similarity although its hard to pinpoint exactly what. The engine is a 2006 Harley hybrid single cylinder Roger built from the ground up. The 965CC engine features a lower end consisting of Merch cases with the heads customized from Engenuity and the pistons from Ross and Jims. The cam is custom designed and manufactured by Roger inhouse. The rear head is used on the front cylinder, allowing the induction system to be positioned above the head and cylinder with the angle cut back 15-degrees.
Of course you know its a pushrod engine, which are angled to accommodate this change. And here is the mantra! In place of the rear cylinder he uses a Rotrex Supercharger that spins at 120,000 RPM . This produces 83 rear wheel horse power at 6400 rpm. The bike is completely measurable in current mechanics standard with a fuel injection which uses a 54mm Zippers utilized throttle body and a special Thunder Heart ECM and an extreamly high volume single injector. Roger has also developed a fuel pump mapping program to provide correct air / fuel ratios. The gear is a 6-speed.
The oil system features a modified S&S oil pump and two distinct oil tanks, both cleverly hidden from view, one for engine and the other for supercharger oil. See, thats Roger, he doesn't just do a chasis and framework custom with a readymade engine, he works on the engine like a pro, on the electricals like a pro, its just like a complete new bike with a complete new engine and all. He works on the transmission meaning on the drive, sprocket, everything.
The frame is also made inhouse. The 29.5 degrees rake and 3 inches de-streched gives it the featherbed style. The concealed disc brakes are an ingenious 4-piston disc set up both front and rear. The rear rim is put together by fabricating from two different Kosman rims for the 18-inch x 6-inch tire. The front is a 18-inch x 3.5 inch.
Imagine the ammount of mind numbling he has gone through. Just reading it makes me dizzy and to think about how he actually designed everything... Wow! If you think thats all, wait...
Look at the body and the fenders. There is no welding involved! Really! Roger had hand hammered the aluminum skins! With such precision, he can create probably a Rolex with his hands and available tools. There is only a clear coat over the raw material and the paint used.. is only for lettering. Now, what do you say?
Like a true Cafe Racer, the handlebars are clip-ons with a single rear view mirror on the left bar weight. There are those two beautiful pods housing the Speedometer and gauges and the traditional single round headlamp. Interestingly, Roger used the lens and bezel from a vintage Volkswagen Beetle. Yes, there are tail lights. They are incorporated in the rear of the bikes frame and utilize LED lights. The brake light is also an LED set up hidden in the rear of the seat rail. Look athe photo below closely. There is not one visible wire on the bike except the front disc brake.
Its hard to say why the judges didn't find it as an outright winner in the world championships, but ask any biker, he or she will definitely sing the Duran Duran hit... 'Lay your seedy judgements. Who says they're part of our lives? You pay the prophets to justify your reasons. I heard your promise, but I don't believe it. That's why I've done it again. No-no-Notorious'. Make that NoRtorious!!!
